There is little in the news other than coronavirus at the moment unfortunately. As the UK lockdown continues we have all adapted and changed our day to day routines in order to cope and stick to the rules.

It’s not all doom and gloom though, we are all now more time ‘rich’ than we’ve ever been. Less time commuting (my commute has reduced by 40 minutes each way) and leaving the house less has meant that we’ve all had a bit more time to focus on ourselves and our loved ones.

Here are a few of the things I’ve enjoyed doing during quarantine;

Sorted out the garden.

I’ve become Cambridge’s very own Alan Titchmarch and have now got a variety of herbs and vegetables growing in my newly tidied garden. I have learned that plants do grow more quickly if you check up on them every hour. Jokes aside though, I’ve been surprised at how good it has made me, and the rest of my housemates feel having little plants to look after.

Joined the rest of the UK and baked a banana bread

Along with an assortment of other cakes and sweet treats.  I haven’t baked in years, and they’re not quite Great British Bake Off standard, but making things at home is much more exciting than buying them.

Increased appreciation of our local shops.

Whilst having an Aldi and Tesco nearby is great, it comes with the hinderance of often facing long queues.  With the rest of the high street closed, the idea of losing our little cornershop and local butchers makes me feel like we really should be supporting local businesses as much as we can. Luckily in Cambridge, the small local businesses have adapted very quickly to closures and have managed to keep selling. My housemate got a delivery of sourdough from her favourite bakery, and the wine merchants came and delivered cases of wine direct to the doorstep in record time.

Taken up cycling.

I know for a fact if I was able to do other things with my Saturday other than cycle, I would. Despite having a bike that is not fit for purpose - it’s been fun trying a new hobby on the day that I don’t want to run. You get to cover a much further distance allowing you to explore new villages that you wouldn’t otherwise.

So, whilst we’re in lockdown, try and focus on some of the positives. Hopefully some of us will find a new hobby (and keep it!) once we’re allowed out again!
