In early January, there’s always a flurry of articles, such as this one from the Guardian, reminding us that ‘less than 10% of resolutions have been kept by year’s end’ and giving advice about how to increase our chances of success. Helpful suggestions come from all sides – from fitness experts, wellbeing professionals, life coaches, financial advisers, work colleagues, friends, family…

So this year I tuned out of the noise and chose just one resolution. It wasn’t about depriving myself by saving money, dieting or reducing alcohol intake. It was about doing more of something I loved but wasn’t making enough time for. I remember at the time it felt like a bit of a cop out but already I’m reaping the benefits.

I love to run. I love that when I’m running I’m not thinking about anything else. I love being in the cold morning air when my fingers are so cold I think they might crack and I can see my breath puffing out like a steam train. I love catching sight of the occasional fox, wren or stoat. I love leaving the house when it’s dark, seeing the sun rising and returning home as it’s getting light.

Here we are at the end of January. I’m running 3 times a week and have the Cambridge Half Marathon www.cambridgehalfmarathon.com to aim for in March. I feel fitter, happier and more alert.

So my advice for resolutions? Think twice about depriving yourself. Go for something you love and reap the rewards.
