Since March there’s two vitamins which are on the tip of everyone’s tongue. Vitamin C, and Vitamin D. Both vitamins have had a surge in demand, leaving shops low on stock, and manufacturers working at full capacity to try and keep up. But why?

It’s pretty standard behaviour now to feel a bit run down and nip to the shops to grab some vitamin C tablets, some oranges, and maybe some orange juice. I am sure that half of those doing this, don’t know how Vitamin C helps, but it is just engrained in our brains that it does!

How does Vitamin C help?

  • Supports various cellular functions of both innate and adaptive immune system
  • Helps microbial killing – by generating reactive oxygen species and enhancing phagocytosis
  • Vitamin C also helps in a whole host of other ways; being an antioxidant it fights free radicals in the body which can help prevent cancers and heart disease, as well as helping reduce the risk of cartilage loss in those with osteoarthritis.

Does supplementing Vitamin C help?

There has been a lot of research surrounding vitamin C, with several studies due to complete shortly that have been looking at the effects of vitamin C supplementation with COVID-19 patients.

  • Giving 2g Vitamin C a day to COVID-19 patients resulted in a reduction of mortality. The mortality rate of COVID-19 patients in the Westminster ICU ward was 29% compared to a national average of 41%

Other studies looking at other viruses indicate that taking a high dosage of Vitamin C in the early stages of illness, helps prevent patients from getting into the critically ill phase (cytokine storm phase).

A study in Wuhan has shown that 24g dose of Vitamin C resulted in 1/3 less mortality than placebo.

In essence, vitamin C is here to stay, and potentially is more important than ever.
