A recent study from Barts University College London suggests training for & completing a marathon improves a new runner’s arteries cutting four years off their vascular age.

The study followed 138 novice runners over six months of training, their arteries regaining elasticity that will reduce the risk of heart attack & strokes with blood pressure reducing as if they were given prescribed medication. Those who were least fit prior to training benefitted the most.

The British Heart Foundation recommends that during the course of a week adults should either take 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise such as walking or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise such as running. Core strength exercises such as press ups & sit ups are also recommended.

I got back into running in 2014 in order to complete the Cambridge Half Marathon. The ‘Couch to 5k’ was really useful & while my 2 hours 18 minutes for my first Cambridge Half didn’t trouble any judges last year’s 1 hour 52 minutes shows some improvement & equates to 3 miles on the ground.

My cardiovascular improvement I notice every day.
