Turmeric, a well known holistic herb is starting to become increasingly popular in the U.K. you can get turmeric spiced lattes from Starbucks, supplements from Holland+Barrett and even turmeric infused gin. But it’s still not the huge phenomenon it is in the East, in particular India.
Just last week I went to India to visit a friend, and I was amazed at the amount of turmeric available from supermarkets, market stalls, pharmacists. The country is absolutely obsessed with it. My friend had a problem with her tooth and her dentist and pharmacist both prescribed turmeric supplements straight away.
Turmeric contains active ingredients called curcuminoids, of which the most popular is curcumin. Benefits of these curcuminoids include anti-inflammatory effects, strong antioxidative effects, as well as being linked to improved brain function and reduced risk of heart disease. Infact, the chef I was speaking to in Delhi said they all use turmeric almost like we would a multivitamin each day.
High quality turmeric can be standardised to 95% curcuminoids. This is a product that we can offer here at Opalbond, whether you would like it as an ingredient or as a finished product. Within the U.K and Europe there is a huge case of adulteration of turmeric; where manufacturers add paprika or marigold extract to bulk up the product. This can lead to the curcuminoids being at a level lower than 10%; making the benefits less effective for the end consumer.
